This was the reality for a commuter in Chennai, who found themselves in a perplexing situation when their auto driver displayed a strict message inside the vehicle: "Gpay not available. No stop for ATM withdrawal."

The incident was shared by a user named No Context Suvee on social media platform X, where she posted a picture of the auto's interior with the message in clear view. Alongside the image, she humorously captioned it, "It was nice knowing y'all."

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has revolutionized the way Indians conduct financial transactions, offering a seamless and instant method for transferring money via mobile devices. The growth of digital payments in the country has been exponential since the introduction of UPI, with government data revealing a staggering increase from Rs 1 lakh crore in FY 2017-18 to Rs 139 lakh crore in FY 2022-23, showcasing a remarkable CAGR of 168%.

With a significant portion of the population now relying on digital payments, the need for physical cash has diminished. However, there are still pockets of resistance among some auto drivers and vendors who have yet to fully embrace this digital trend.

In the comments section of the post, No Context Suvee revealed that she had booked the ride through an application and was taken aback when the driver refused UPI payments upon arrival. The lack of communication from the driver prior to the pickup location added to the confusion and frustration of the situation.

One commenter expressed their empathy, calling it their "worst nightmare," while another speculated humorously that the driver may have mistakenly placed the sign outside the auto instead of inside.
