Reports Eagles bring back DB C.J. Gardner-Johnson

C.J. Gardner-Johnson returns to Eagles after injury-plagued season with Lions, signs three-year deal worth up to $33 million.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson has officially agreed to a three-year contract to return to the Philadelphia Eagles after a brief stint with the Detroit Lions in free agency last year, as reported by ESPN and the Detroit Free-Press. Known for his dynamic skills as a defensive back who excels near the line of scrimmage, Gardner-Johnson unfortunately missed the majority of the 2023 regular season due to a torn pectoral muscle, only appearing in three games. Despite being placed on injured reserve following a Week 2 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, he worked tirelessly to make a comeback towards the end of the season and into the playoffs.

At 26 years old, Gardner-Johnson's new deal with the Eagles could potentially earn him up to $33 million, according to ESPN. Lions coach Dan Campbell previously lauded him as an integral part of Detroit's defense, and the Eagles quickly realized his value to the team after his departure. Having been a key starter during the Eagles' run to the Super Bowl two seasons ago, Gardner-Johnson's return fills a crucial gap in the team's roster, particularly at the safety position.

Last season, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman made significant moves to bolster the team's defense, including acquiring former All-Pro Kevin Byard through a trade with the Titans. However, the safety position remained a concern throughout the 2023 season. By bringing back Gardner-Johnson, the Eagles address one of their primary needs in free agency, alongside other notable signings such as running back Saquon Barkley and guard Landon Dickerson, who reportedly signed a massive $84 million deal.

Originally acquired by the Eagles from the Saints in 2022, Gardner-Johnson previously played for New Orleans from 2019 to 2021. His return to Philadelphia signifies a reunion with a team where he has already made a significant impact, and fans are eager to see him back in action on the field.
