In their statement, his family described Mitchell as a beloved father, husband, brother, uncle, son, and dear friend. They also highlighted his impressive career, noting that he portrayed a wide range of characters in films and television shows, including an Olympic hopeful, an apocalypse survivor, an astronaut, a superhero's dad, and four unique Star Trekkers.

The Toronto native leaves behind his wife Susan May Pratt and their two children, 16-year-old Lilah and 11-year-old Kallum. Throughout his career, Mitchell accumulated over 50 film and TV credits, with notable roles as Klingons Kol, Kol-Sha, Tenavik, and Aurellio on "Star Trek: Discovery" and as the father of Carol Danvers in "Captain Marvel." He also appeared in popular shows and movies such as "Miracle," "Jericho," "The Astronaut Wives Club," "Ghost Whisperer," and "Switched at Birth."

After being diagnosed with ALS in 2018, Mitchell openly shared his experience with his followers on social media. Last August, he reflected on the five-year anniversary of his diagnosis, expressing gratitude for the day ahead and acknowledging the difficult times he had faced alongside the blessings he had received.
