Apollo Global Hires 350 People in 2021: Company Culture Described as "Super Nice" and "Low-Ego"

Apollo Global is hiring in Mumbai, North America, and Europe, with a focus on origination, high net worth coverage, and new products.

If you're in search of a rapidly growing, high-paying, and yet modest place to work, Jane Street might be the right fit for you. However, if you're not a developer or a quant, you might want to consider Apollo Global instead. This buy-side firm has been undergoing significant hiring and is considered a reformed employer.

During Apollo's investor call last week, the firm's CFO, Martin Kelly, revealed that they hired 350 people last year, representing an increase of nearly 9%. Kelly mentioned that half of the net new hires were located in North America and Europe, with the other half in Mumbai. Looking ahead to 2024, Apollo plans to continue hiring in a "very targeted" manner, with a focus on Mumbai, scaling origination, building high net worth coverage, and exploring new products and product creation. CEO Marc Rowan also highlighted the firm's remarkable growth, stating that they've grown 14x since 2008, surpassing the revenue growth of tech giants like Apple and Microsoft.

While Apollo has experienced significant growth, it has also undergone changes in its culture. In 2021, the firm increased associates' pay by $100k to $550k a year after facing threats of mass resignations. Former co-founder Josh Harris, known for his demanding leadership style, stepped down in 2021, and under Rowan's leadership, the firm's culture has become more diverse and less micromanaged. However, some associates still report long hours and high-pressure work environments, while others have found the workplace to be more relaxed and accommodating.

Despite the differing opinions on Apollo's work culture, the firm was ranked fourth among the best private capital employers. However, it was also considered less conducive to wellbeing than some of its competitors. Apollo has yet to comment on these assessments.
