Tim Burton to remake sci-fi classic after Beetlejuice 2

Tim Burton is back with a Beetlejuice sequel and a remake of Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, written by Gillian Flynn.

It has been half a decade since Tim Burton released his last film, the live-action Dumbo remake, which resulted in him not wanting to work with Disney again. However, fans will be pleased to know that he is making a big cinematic comeback in 2024. His highly anticipated Beetlejuice sequel is set to be released in the fall, and the official title has been revealed as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. But that's not all - it has been announced that Burton will be remaking a sci-fi classic as his next project.

Continuing his collaboration with Warner Bros. Pictures, Burton has been chosen to direct a remake of the 1958 film, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. The script is being penned by Gillian Flynn, known for her work on Sharp Objects, Utopia, Gone Girl, and Widows. Burton will also produce the film alongside Andrew Mittman and Tommy Harper, with Kai Dolbashian serving as executive producer.

The original Attack of the 50 Foot Woman was an independent movie distributed by Allied Artists Pictures Corporation. Starring Alison Hayes, William Hudson, and Yvette Vickers, the film follows a woman who becomes a giant after coming into contact with an alien spaceship. She uses her newfound height to cause chaos, seeking revenge on her unfaithful husband. The movie is now considered a cult classic and has been referenced in pop culture. It was previously remade as a TV movie for HBO in 1993 and parodied in films such as Attack of the 60 Foot Centerfold and Attack of the 50 Foot Cheerleader.

While it is unclear whether Burton's remake will be set in the 1950s or the present day, the director has experience with sci-fi films set in the 1950s, having previously directed Mars Attacks! and a biographical drama about cult filmmaker Ed Wood.

Although Burton's take on Attack of the 50 Foot Woman is still in the works, fans are eager to see how he and Gillian Flynn will reimagine the story for modern audiences. After the mixed critical reception of Dumbo, there is hope that this remake will be better received. In addition to his work on the Beetlejuice sequel, Burton has also been involved in producing and directing episodes of Wednesday, a popular series based on the Addams Family character.
