Detroit Lions add Zach Ertz to their roster for a spicy addition

The Detroit Lions sign Super Bowl champion Zach Ertz to practice squad, potentially elevating him for NFC Championship game vs. 49ers.

The Detroit Lions are shaking up their playoff roster by adding former Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl champion tight end Zach Ertz to their practice squad. According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, there's a possibility that Ertz will be promoted before Sunday's NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Ertz had been on the Arizona Cardinals roster until late November, when he was released to sign with a contender and pursue a second Super Bowl ring. After a longer-than-anticipated search, he finally has the opportunity to compete for another Lombardi trophy.

The decision to bring Ertz on board came after backup tight end Brock Wright suffered an injury during Sunday's playoff victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Head coach Dan Campbell indicated that Wright's availability for the championship game "doesn't look real good," as reported by the Detroit Free Press.

With Wright sidelined, rookie tight end sensation Sam LaPorta is currently the only healthy tight end on the Lions' roster, at least until Ertz is officially called up. However, LaPorta is also dealing with a hyperextended knee and is still wearing a knee brace.

This situation means that Ertz could play a significant role in the Lions' offensive game plan. While the team does have two strong fullbacks who can step into a blocking role, Ertz provides Detroit with a pass-catching tight end who has Super Bowl experience.

The Lions will face a formidable opponent in the 49ers on Sunday, known for their offensive firepower and a formidable defense, particularly the dynamic linebacker duo of Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw. This formidable defense may have influenced the Lions' decision to bring in Ertz.

It will be exciting to see what Ertz and LaPorta can accomplish together, especially if Ertz is still at the top of his game. The potential pairing of these two tight ends could pose a significant threat, adding a new dynamic to the Lions' offensive strategy.
