While she was nominated for an award for her role in the Netflix series Dead to Me, she ultimately lost to another actor. In a 2023 interview, she hinted that this role might be her last on-camera performance due to her MS diagnosis. Applegate has also faced other health issues, including breast cancer in 2008 and the removal of her ovarian and fallopian tubes in 2017.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease of the central nervous system, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The immune system cells target myelin in the central nervous system, leading to increased disability over time. In a candid interview with Vanity Fair, Applegate shared her struggles with the disease, expressing the challenges of everyday tasks that many people take for granted.

In November 2022, she received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, marking her first public appearance since sharing her MS diagnosis news. During the ceremony, she chose to go barefoot, explaining that the sensation of shoes may be uncomfortable for some with MS. In her acceptance speech, she openly discussed her condition, stating that she "can't stand for too long."
