Houston winter weather leads to event cancelations and dangerous conditions. Winter weather advisories, road conditions, and warming stations in Houston.

Houston experienced severe winter weather conditions on Monday, leading to the cancellation of events and dangerous conditions throughout the region. A cold air mass brought freezing rain and prompted winter weather advisories for much of Southeast Texas. As a result, road conditions deteriorated and schools were forced to close.

To assist those without power or shelter, several Houston nonprofits and warming stations announced the availability of warming stations. These shelters can be found throughout the region, from the City of Houston to Conroe. Pets are allowed at official City of Houston shelters, but may be required to stay in kennels. Additionally, Brazoria County libraries and the Salvation Army and Compassion United in Conroe are offering relief for residents in need.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Houston until 6 p.m. Monday, warning of light freezing rain and icy road conditions in subfreezing temperatures. With temperatures unlikely to rise above freezing and overnight temperatures as low as 23 degrees, the city remains under a wind chill advisory. Tuesday's outlook offers some relief, with sunshine and temperatures briefly climbing above freezing in the afternoon. The big thaw is expected to begin on Wednesday, with peak temperatures near 50 degrees under sunny skies.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas ended an energy conservation appeal at 10 a.m. Monday, following a request for Texans to conserve electricity due to the winter weather, high demand, and low wind. Unfortunately, the cold weather also led to a fatal fire in north Harris County, caused by heating lamps intended to keep dogs warm.

In light of the extreme cold, both of Houston's Martin Luther King Jr. Day parades were canceled, along with the MLK Boulevard trail ride. These cancellations were made in response to the winter weather advisory and the dangerous conditions expected throughout the region.
