Smith had previously announced his intention to speak out against Whitlock, indicating the strength of his comments to his pastor, ESPN colleagues, and family. During his podcast, Smith did not hold back, describing Whitlock as "the worst human being any of you will ever meet" and advising people to protect their souls from him. Smith made it clear that he was not a forgiving person when it came to Whitlock, defending his memoir and refuting claims that he did not write it. Whitlock had expressed doubts about Smith's recruitment by Winston-Salem State's basketball team, prompting a response from Smith.
