"Jack Black cast as Steve in 2025 Minecraft movie"

"Minecraft movie finally in the works after years of rumors, with Jack Black reportedly set to star as protagonist Steve."

It's absolutely mind-boggling that a Minecraft movie hasn't already been made. As one of the most successful media franchises in history, it seems like a guaranteed box office hit, potentially raking in over $1 billion. Despite rumors dating back to 2014, it wasn't until 2022 that the details started to come together. Now, with Deadline's report that Jack Black has signed on to play the live-action version of the game's protagonist, Steve, it feels like the movie is finally taking a step closer to reality.

The idea of a Minecraft movie has been floating around for years. Former owner Markus "Notch" Persson revealed in 2014 that Warner had optioned the title, and since then, various names have been attached and then detached from the project. Shawn Levy, Kieran and Michele Mulroney, Rob McElhenney, Peter Sollett, and Jason Momoa have all been involved at various points. Now, with a 2025 release date announced and Jared Hess directing, it seems like the movie might actually happen.

According to Deadline's sources, Jack Black is set to play the player-character, Steve, in the movie. He will be joined by Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen in unknown roles. While little else is known about the film, it's rumored that filming will start in New Zealand soon, and the plot and current writers remain a mystery. However, it's likely that the movie will follow the framework of a villager setting out to enter the Nether and defeat the Ender Dragon, with plenty of opportunities for action and fun along the way.

The popularity of Minecraft cannot be overstated. It's one of the biggest-selling video games of all time, estimated to have sold 238 million copies, far surpassing the second-place game, GTA V. When Microsoft purchased the game for $2.5 billion in 2014, many doubted the decision, but the franchise's success over the past decade has proven it to be a wise investment.

With the involvement of Jack Black, it's hard to imagine the Minecraft movie not being a massive success. If Warner and Legendary can avoid making a flop, it's likely that the film will bring in billions and further solidify Minecraft's place as one of the most successful franchises of all time.
