BBC documentary King Charles shed light Queen Elizabeth II final days

A new documentary will reveal Queen Elizabeth II's final days, including her thoughts on her passing and her son's coronation.

A new documentary is set to provide an in-depth look at Queen Elizabeth II's final days. The Princess Royal, Anne, shared that the Queen had concerns about dying at Balmoral, but was persuaded to step back from the "decision making process". In the BBC documentary, "Charles III: The Coronation Year," Anne discusses the late Queen's thought process during her last days. She also reflects on the accession of her brother as King, stating that "I'm not sure that anybody can really prepare themselves for that kind of change."

The 90-minute documentary, narrated by Helena Bonham Carter, will be available to watch on Boxing Day (December 26) on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 6.50pm. It features contributions from Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and close friends, giving viewers a behind-the-scenes look at rehearsals for the coronation.

Anne shares candid moments from her mother's final days, expressing relief when the Imperial State Crown was removed from her coffin, symbolizing her role passing to Charles. She also praises Queen Camilla for her "outstanding" understanding of her role as consort and the difference it makes to the King.

The documentary also delves into the significant changes in Charles' life as he becomes King, showcasing his firsts from overseas state visits to hosting foreign dignitaries. Anne reflects on the monarchy as a 365-day occupation, emphasizing that it doesn't stop because of a change in monarchs.

The program also highlights the King's speech at a state banquet staged in honor of President Ramaphosa, showing candid moments in the build-up to the coronation. Charles is seen relaxed and joking with Archbishop Welby and his son, the Prince of Wales. Camilla is portrayed as a supportive figure by Charles' side throughout the documentary.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his wife are shown spending time at Balmoral as the King's guests, with Sunak commending Charles' first year as King. The documentary offers a comprehensive view of the late Queen's final days, the transition to Charles as King, and the significant changes in the monarchy.
