PNC Championship importance to Lee Trevino: love and family

Golf legend Lee Trevino gets a lesson from a golf instructor to help him prepare for the PNC Championship.

Lee Trevino, a World Golf Hall of Fame member and six-time major champion, is gearing up to compete in this year's PNC Championship. When he started preparing for the event, he encountered some struggles with his game. His son, Daniel, who will be his partner in the two-person scramble format team event, suggested he seek help from renowned instructor Randy Smith. Despite Trevino's vow to not take lessons from anyone he could beat, he decided to reach out to Smith for help. The lesson paid off, and Trevino has seen improvements in his game.

At 84 years old, Trevino considers the PNC Championship his major and looks forward to it every year. He has played in every edition since the inaugural event in 1995 and has become the field's elder statesman. The championship has evolved to feature 20 major champions and their relatives competing for the Willie Park Trophy, with a waitlist just to get in the field.

Trevino's outlook on family has been influenced by his own experiences growing up without a father and his relationships with his children. He admits to having been absent from his children's lives, but credits Jack Nicklaus for showing him a better way. Trevino now prioritizes his family, particularly his youngest children, Olivia and Daniel, with his third wife Claudia Bove.

Despite his age and physical limitations, Trevino shows no signs of slowing down and remains committed to competing in the father-son event. He has a lifetime exemption into the limited field and plans to continue participating for as long as he can.

Trevino's dedication to the PNC Championship and his family reflects the importance of familial bonds in his life. He looks forward to competing alongside his son Daniel and cherishes the time they spend together on the golf course. Their shared experiences and the memories they create during the championship are cherished by Trevino, and they look forward to reminiscing and improving for next year's event.
