Boston Mayor Michelle Wu apologizes sending electeds of color holiday party invite full council

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu apologizes for sending 'electeds of color' holiday party invite to full council, sparking mixed reactions.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu issued an apology this week after an email intended for elected officials of color was mistakenly sent to every single council member. The email, sent by Wu's aide Denise DosSantos, invited officials to the Electeds of Color Holiday Party at the Parkman House. Wu, the city's first Asian American mayor, acknowledged the error and explained that it was customary for diverse council members to take turns hosting the annual party. She emphasized that the holiday gatherings for all elected officials were also planned and expressed her excitement for celebrating with everyone. While the move reportedly disappointed some council members, others, including outgoing councilor Frank Baker and council member Brian Worrell, expressed differing reactions to the email. Baker, who is white, called the exclusion "unfortunate and divisive," while Worrell, who is Black, stated that the Elected Officials of Color group has been around for over a decade and is no different from other specific groups in the city and city government. This incident highlights the importance of inclusive communication and the need to ensure that all members of the council feel valued and included.
