Osimhen wins African player of the year ahead of Champions League game. Oshoala wins women's award.

Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen was named African player of the year, and Asisat Oshoala won the best women's player honor.

Victor Osimhen, the Nigerian forward, was honored as the African player of the year for his impressive performance in helping Napoli secure their first Italian league title in 33 years. This recognition came just in time for Osimhen as he prepared for a crucial Champions League game against Braga. The 24-year-old expressed his gratitude to Africa for their support and dedication to him, especially in light of the challenges he has faced, particularly the loss of his parents. Asisat Oshoala, also from Nigeria, was awarded the best women's player for the sixth time, marking a significant achievement in her career. The coaching awards were given to Walid Regragui for leading Morocco to the 2022 World Cup semifinals and Desiree Ellis, coach of the 2022 African champion South Africa. These awards were determined through a voting process involving the African soccer body's technical committee, media, captains and coaches of national teams, as well as clubs who participated in continental competitions.
