Before becoming an NFL quarterback, Browning excelled academically and as a recruit. He achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA at Folsom High School and set state and national records for career touchdown passes. He was recruited to the University of Washington, where he also excelled academically at the Foster School of Business.

During his time at Washington, Browning made history by becoming the first true freshman to start a season opener at quarterback for the Huskies. He also led the team to its first conference title in 16 years and finished his college career as the school's all-time passing leader.

Despite his collegiate success, Browning went undrafted in 2019 due to concerns about his size and athleticism. He signed with the Vikings and spent two seasons on and off the practice squad behind Kirk Cousins.

In 2021, Browning joined the Bengals' practice squad after being released by the Vikings. He worked his way up to the No. 2 quarterback position behind Burrow, ultimately earning the opportunity to start in the absence of the injured Pro Bowl starter. He made his NFL debut during the Bengals' Week 1 game against the Browns.
