Newcastle 1-0 Manchester United Player Ratings: Man United Transfer News

Manchester United lost 1-0 to Newcastle. Player ratings given. Rashford's poor performance highlighted. Manager criticized for aimless team.

Manchester United suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Newcastle in their recent match. Here are our player ratings for the game.

Andre Onana - 5
Onana made a fine stop, but there was a sense of panic in the team whenever the ball reached him. It seems that his good spell before the Galatasaray match was just a false dawn.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka - 3
Wan-Bissaka seemed more out of position than in, which has become a significant issue against teams that use the wings to create attacks. His performance was not helped by Rashford's refusal to track back, as Newcastle's goal came from his side.

Harry Maguire - 6
Maguire was the only player who came away with some credit, continuing his good form with a proactive defensive game.

Luke Shaw - 5
Shaw seemed wasted at centre-back, as the ball progression from the wings was completely wiped away when he was not there.

Diogo Dalot - 4
Dalot seemed to be affected by the same issues as Wan-Bissaka, with his aimless positioning allowing Almiron to create chances at will down his side. He made little to no attacking contribution.

Kobbie Mainoo - 6
Mainoo bravely tried to show for the ball in a relentless game with the crowd on his back. United's semblance of calm only came when the ball was at his feet.

Scott McTominay - 5
McTominay's style of play may never look pretty when United don't boss possession, as he is primarily a goalscorer from midfield.

Marcus Rashford - 3
Rashford has always been a player of extremes, but this version might be the worst he has ever looked. He showed no tracking back, attacking threat, dribbling skills, or finishing.

Bruno Fernandes - 6
Fernandes was everywhere and almost worked as the extra defender when those whose job it was to defend just couldn't cope. However, he had very little of the ball to create chances.

Alejandro Garnacho - 6
Garnacho had a good early chance, and his speed on the break looked like United's only threat in a disappointing attacking performance overall.

Anthony Martial - 4
Martial's lackadaisical game was evident when watching him press from the front, especially after seeing Hojlund put himself about recently. When United are not bossing the game, it seems like they might as well play with 10 men.

Substitutes:

Rasmus Hojlund - 5
Hojlund couldn't make the ball stick after coming on and seemed overwhelmed by the physicality of Lascelles. There was not much to work with in attack.

Antony - 5
Antony put himself about after coming on, which was more than what Rashford did, but not much else.

Sergio Reguilon - 6
Reguilon had United's best shot of the game after coming on, with a stinger from outside the box which was blocked by Schar.

Sofyan Amrabat - 5
Amrabat had not much of an impact after coming on.

Manager Erik ten Hag - 5
It's not clear what ten Hag wants to do with this team, as they lunge from one aimless performance to another. Injuries are not an excuse against a decimated Magpies team.
