MLB free agency 2023 tracker: Sonny Gray signs three-year, $75 million deal with Cardinals

St. Louis Cardinals overhauling rotation for 2024 MLB season, signing Sonny Gray, Lance Lynn, and Kyle Gibson. Phillies sign Aaron Nola.

The St. Louis Cardinals are making major changes to their pitching rotation in preparation for the 2024 MLB season. They recently signed Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson, and have now added Sonny Gray on a three-year, $75 million deal.

Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Phillies made a big move in free agency by reportedly reaching a seven-year, $172 million contract with pitcher Aaron Nola, who was ranked as the third-best free agent by Yahoo Sports' Zach Crizer.

Several other notable free agents, including Shohei Ohtani, Blake Snell, Cody Bellinger, and Josh Hader, rejected qualifying offers from their former teams, with the value of the offer being $20.35 million for one year. It's worth noting that historically, only a small percentage of qualifying offers have been accepted.

In the realm of managerial changes, the Cleveland Guardians hired Stephen Vogt to replace Terry Francona, who retired. The Guardians' move was followed by the hiring of Ron Washington as the new manager of the Washington Nationals. Washington previously managed the Texas Rangers, leading them to two AL pennants and coming close to winning the World Series in 2011.

Additionally, the San Diego Padres hired former St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Shildt as the replacement for Bob Melvin. Shildt had been working in an advisory role for the Padres and briefly served as their third-base coach.

These moves mark significant changes in both player acquisitions and managerial hires, setting the stage for an exciting 2024 MLB season.
