Syracuse football SU survives wild finish Wake Forest advances bowl game 35-31 win

Syracuse Orange fought hard in a thrilling game against Wake Forest, with QB Garrett Shrader leading the team to victory.

The Syracuse Orange faced their last opportunity to extend their season, and they put up a fierce fight against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the Dome. It was Senior Day, a chance to bid farewell to the graduating class and potentially secure a 13th game for the season.

The spotlight was on Garrett Shrader, who showcased his dual-threat abilities as a quarterback, running and throwing the ball to keep the defense on edge throughout the game. The Mob defense set the tone early, holding off Wake Forest's opening possession and forcing a crucial stop on a 3rd-and-15 play.

With Shrader at QB, LeQuint Allen took charge, rushing for first downs in the opening plays. Dan Villar made SU's first pass, connecting with Umari Hatcher for a 5-yard gain. However, it was Shrader's arm that ultimately made the difference, throwing a 35-yard touchdown pass to Alford.

Wake Forest responded with a swift 75-yard drive, culminating in a 16-yard touchdown pass from QB Michael Kern to Wesley Grimes. Shrader led a methodical 17-play drive, finishing with a 1-yard sneak touchdown to give the Orange the lead.

The Mob defense held Wake Forest to a field goal on the next drive, and the Orange were stopped at the 1-yard line to close out the first half. After halftime, Dan Villari threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Alford, extending the Orange's lead.

Wake Forest mounted a comeback with a long touchdown drive, but Shrader answered with another touchdown pass to Umari Hatcher. The Deacons cut the deficit to one score, but the Orange defense held strong, ultimately securing a hard-fought victory.
