Ohio State Michigan Notebook: Offensive Line Inconsistencies, Ryan Day Field Goal Decision, Marvin Harrison Jr. Record-Breaking Performance

Ohio State's offensive line's performance was inconsistent in a loss to Michigan, with Ryan Day's coaching decisions also under scrutiny.

Ohio State's final drive against Michigan on Saturday was a microcosm of the team's offensive line performance throughout the game. Head coach Ryan Day acknowledged that there were some positive aspects, such as good protection and drives, but overall, the line's performance was inconsistent.

The final play of the game saw Kyle McCord attempting a pass to Marvin Harrison Jr., only to be intercepted by Michigan safety Rod Moore due to pressure from Jaylen Harrell. Harrell had run over left guard Donovan Jackson, who was considered the foundation of Ohio State's offensive line. This collapse led to a 30-24 loss.

While McCord only took one sack during the game, he was under pressure at various points, affecting his throws. The running game also had inconsistencies, with Ohio State picking up just 3.1 yards per carry on 12 first-half rushing attempts.

However, on a 75-yard touchdown drive in the third quarter, the Buckeyes ran the ball each of the final eight plays, showing moments of dominance on the ground. The offensive line's performance was highlighted by backup running back Chip Trayanum's success, but overall, the team finished with 53 rushing yards on 3.1 yards per carry.

A controversial decision by Day came when Ohio State settled for a 52-yard field goal attempt on a 4th-and-2 before the end of the first half. Day felt it was worth the opportunity to kick the field goal, considering the team's defense in the first half.

Marvin Harrison Jr. made history with his performance, but it was overshadowed by the loss. He expressed disappointment at not achieving his goal of beating Michigan and making the Big Ten Championship Game.

Punter Jesse Mirco's performance was also a point of concern, averaging just 36.7 yards per punt on three kicks and failing to pin Michigan inside their 20-yard line.

This loss marked the first time Ohio State has lost three straight games against Michigan since 1995-97, bringing unfavorable comparisons to former coach John Cooper. Day's record now sits at just 1-3 in The Game as a head coach.
