Lance Jones defense opens up Braden Smiths offense for Purdue basketball

Lance Jones and Braden Smith led Purdue to a big win with their combo, impressing fans and coach Matt Painter.

Lance Jones had high expectations for the transition, but it didn't go as smoothly as he had hoped. Unfortunately, his team suffered a significant 87-57 loss to the Boilermakers in Mackey Arena, largely due to the Smith-Jones combo.

Coach Spradlin acknowledged the disruptive defensive capabilities of his players, emphasizing the importance of setting the tone for the team's defense. He recognized the impact Smith and Jones had on the game.

Last season, Smith faced immense pressure as a true freshman in Big Ten basketball. However, with Jones on the team, Smith can focus more on facilitating the offense, alleviating some of the stress and pressure he previously experienced.

Jones' defensive prowess made it difficult for Morehead State's point guards, allowing Smith to excel in running Purdue's offense. Smith's impressive performance included 11 points, 11 assists, and eight rebounds before Coach Painter took him out of the game.

Painter was pleased with the outcome and the synergy between Jones and Smith. He recognized the value of Jones' defensive skills and their positive impact on the team's performance.

In addition to his defensive contributions, Jones also scored 15 points, including three 3-pointers, one of which ignited the crowd at Mackey Arena. His defensive efforts were particularly noteworthy in a place that values the principles of "play hard" and "defense lives here."
