Joe Root becomes first England batter to score 1000 runs in ODI World Cup 2023 vs Pakistan

England got off to an impressive start in their quest for a spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy, which will be held in Pakistan, with a strong performance against Pakistan in Kolkata. Opener Jonny Bairstow set the tone with a brilliant half-century, propelling the team to a total of 200 runs with only two wickets lost in the 34th over. Joe Root also made a significant contribution as the No.3 batter.

Root made history by becoming the first England player to surpass 1000 runs in a World Cup, a milestone that no other English batter had achieved before. In his 26 World Cup matches, Root has batted in 25 of them, boasting an impressive batting average of over 45 and three World Cup centuries. He was the highest run-scorer for England in the 2019 ODI World Cup, with 556 runs in 11 matches, including two centuries and three fifties.

Graham Gooch, a legendary England cricketer, is second on the list of most runs scored for England in World Cups, with 897 runs in 21 matches. He participated in four different ODI World Cups from 1979 to 1992. The highest run-scorer in World Cups overall is the iconic Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 2278 runs in 44 matches for India in six World Cups.
