Angels hire Ron Washington manager replace Phil Nevin

Los Angeles Angels hire Ron Washington as new manager, aiming to end a decade of losing. Washington is now MLB's oldest manager.

The Los Angeles Angels have named Ron Washington as their new manager, hoping to turn around nearly a decade of losing. At 71 years old, Washington is now the oldest current manager in Major League Baseball and only the second active Black manager, joining the Dodgers' Dave Roberts.

Washington previously managed the Texas Rangers from 2007-2014, leading them to two AL pennants and a 664-611 record. He then spent seven seasons as the Atlanta Braves' third base coach, contributing to their 2021 World Series title.

Replacing Phil Nevin, who was not re-signed after 1 1/2 losing seasons, Washington will be tasked with reviving the Angels, who have had eight consecutive losing seasons and nine straight non-playoff seasons, the longest streaks in the majors.

The Angels' owner, Arte Moreno, has high hopes for Washington's experience and leadership to bring success to a franchise with a big payroll and star players like three-time AL MVP Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani, who recently became a free agent.

Washington's two-year contract makes him the fourth manager for the Angels in the last six seasons following the departure of Mike Scioscia in 2018. As a manager, Washington has had his share of challenges, including testing positive for cocaine use during the 2009 season and resigning from the Rangers in 2014 due to an extramarital affair.

Known for his personable and old-school approach, Washington has a strong coaching history, having spent 13 seasons with the Oakland Athletics in addition to his time with the Rangers and Braves. His impact on the game extends beyond managing, as he has been influential in improving players' performance and has mentored several All-Star infielders.

Washington's hiring also makes him the oldest current manager in MLB, surpassing Bruce Bochy and Brian Snitker, both 68. With his wealth of experience and success, Washington's appointment as the Angels' manager is a significant move for the team as they look to turn their fortunes around.
