Somers died one day before what would have been her 77th birthday after a long battle with breast cancer. The actress read the poem, went to bed, and peacefully passed away in her sleep.

The romantic poem, as shared by an outlet, expressed Hamel's deep love for Somers. He described his love for her as something that couldn't be captured in words or actions. Even the scholars of the Oxford University Press had failed to find a single word to describe it. Hamel referred to their love as "us," a uniquely wonderful and indescribable bond.

A friend of Somers also confirmed that her loving spouse was by her side when she passed away. R. Couri Hay, Somers' longtime publicist, confirmed her passing and shared that she had survived an aggressive form of breast cancer for over 23 years. Hay stated that Somers was surrounded by her husband, son, and immediate family during her final moments.

Somers' family and friends had planned to gather on her birthday to celebrate, but instead, they will now honor her extraordinary life. Somers and Hamel first met in 1969 on the show "Anniversary Game" and got married in 1977. They had children together and Somers also had a son from her previous marriage. She was also a stepmother to Hamel's children from his previous marriage and a grandmother to six grandchildren.
