Lexi Thompson Shoots 1 Over as Play Suspended at Shriners Open

Lexi Thompson becomes seventh woman to play on PGA Tour, shooting 1-over par before round suspension at Shriners Children's Open.

Lexi Thompson, a renowned golfer, made history as the seventh woman to compete in the PGA Tour. She displayed her skills during the first round of the Shriners Children's Open at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. Although the round was suspended due to darkness, Thompson managed to shoot a 1-over par through 16 holes, finishing tied for 76th.

The momentum continued for Thompson on the back nine, where she shot 1 under before play was halted. Notably, she birdied the par-5 13th hole with a 7-foot putt. Although she missed a 9-foot birdie putt on the par-5 16th hole, Thompson remained positive about her performance.

Reflecting on her experience, Thompson expressed gratitude for the warm welcome she received and acknowledged the honor of participating in the tournament. She emphasized the significance of the Shriners organization's contributions to helping children, further motivating her to support their cause.

The tournament's cutline will determine whether Thompson advances to the next round. Currently, she is one shot below the cutline, and if she makes it, she will become the first woman since Babe Zaharias in 1945 to achieve this feat on the PGA Tour.

Thompson's participation in the PGA Tour as an LPGA Tour player is a rare occurrence. The last time a female golfer competed in the men's tour was in 2018 when Brittany Lincicome took part in the Barbasol Championship.

While Thompson has faced challenges this season and has not won on the LPGA Tour since 2019, she has shown improvement in recent tournaments. Her performances at the Kroger Queen City Championship, Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, and The Ascendant LPGA have demonstrated her resilience and determination.

As play resumes the following day, Thompson will face a crucial 20-foot, 8-inch putt for par on the 17th hole. The outcome of this putt could have a significant impact on her overall performance in the tournament.
