Lastimosa uncertain about Mikey Williams' TNT return

TNT's Mikey Williams is still absent from the team, leaving them with a depleted roster for the start of the PBA season.

Less than a month remains before the highly anticipated start of Season 48 of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), and there is still no sign of TNT's Filipino-American guard, Mikey Williams, rejoining his team. The absence of Williams was felt as TNT made their debut in the East Asia Super League Season 2, suffering a 93-75 defeat at the hands of the Chiba Jets in Japan. The Tropang Giga were already at a disadvantage with injured big men Poy Erram and Justin Chua unable to play, along with Roger Pogoy and Calvin Oftana also being sidelined. Oftana, who is currently on a 10-day break after the Asian Games, is expected to rejoin the team, but the availability of Williams remains uncertain.

The Tropang Giga will have an opportunity to seek redemption against the Chiba Jets on November 1 when they host the Japanese squad in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. However, when asked about the potential return of Oftana and Williams, TNT coach Mark Lastimosa expressed uncertainty, stating that they are only expecting Oftana to rejoin the team by then. As for Williams, Lastimosa revealed that Chot Reyes, who will serve as a consultant, will be handling the situation while he focuses on coaching. Lastimosa did not provide further details about Williams' absence, simply stating that he is still not with the team.

Mikey Williams, standing at 6-foot-2 and turning 32 this October 27, has proven himself to be an invaluable player for TNT. In the previous season, he showcased his versatility and skills, averaging 22 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists. His outstanding performance played a crucial role in TNT's victory over Barangay Ginebra in the 2022-23 PBA Governors' Cup, where he scored a game-high 38 points, including nine three-pointers. Williams' absence is undoubtedly a setback for the team as they aim to defend their title and make a strong start to the upcoming season.
