Mississippi State football defense needs to find its identity: And quickly

Mississippi State's football team is struggling with defensive issues, allowing high yardage and completion rates, despite strong offensive performances.

The Mississippi State football team's performance on Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium left a strange feeling. Despite a thrilling 37-30 shootout loss to South Carolina, there were standout performances that should have resulted in a win. Quarterback Will Rogers threw for a career-high 487 yards, with receiver Lideatrick Griffin setting a single-game school record with 256 receiving yards. Freshman Kyle Ferrie also impressed with three field goals, including two from over 45 yards.

However, the defensive-minded program, known for producing top-notch defensive players, couldn't secure the victory. This outcome was unexpected and disappointing for those who have witnessed the team's defensive prowess in the past. Linebacker Jett Johnson emphasized the need to return to their defensive identity, both in the passing and running game.

While the focus has been on the team's offensive struggles, the defense has also shown significant weaknesses. In the past three games, the Bulldogs have allowed an average of 464.3 yards and a completion rate of 78.8% on passes. South Carolina, a team with the SEC's worst rushing offense, managed to run for 144 yards against Mississippi State.

Defensive coordinator Zach Arnett acknowledged that the defensive approach was conservative to prevent big plays, but it proved ineffective. The Bulldogs' ability to limit opponents in the red zone last season has also declined, with a scoring rate of 90% this year compared to 81.82% in the previous season.

With Alabama as their next opponent, the team needs to make rapid improvements. Johnson emphasized the importance of discipline, execution, and making plays. The defense must step up and address their shortcomings to support the success of the reconstructed offense.
