Packers' Fourth-Quarter Struggle Highlights Persisting Concern over Run Defense

The Green Bay Packers' run defense struggles continue as they allowed 211 yards rushing in a 25-24 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

The Packers' run defense, which has been a weak point under LaFleur's coaching tenure, was exposed once again as they allowed 211 rushing yards to the Falcons. This loss highlighted the work that still needs to be done to improve their run defense.

The Packers had a challenging early season schedule, facing the Chicago Bears and the Atlanta Falcons, both known for their strong rushing offenses. While the Packers did a decent job against the Bears, limiting them to 122 rushing yards, they struggled against the Falcons. The Falcons' rookie running back, Bijan Robinson, had a standout performance, rushing for 124 yards on 19 carries, including a crucial 7-yard gain on a fourth-and-1 play that set up the game-winning field goal.

LaFleur acknowledged that the Falcons presented some challenges schematically, but also pointed out that the Packers made things difficult for themselves by missing tackles. The team's inability to stop the Falcons' running game ultimately cost them the game.

In terms of statistics, the Packers currently rank 30th in the league in yards rushing allowed per game and 22nd in yards allowed per carry. While these numbers represent a slight improvement from previous seasons, it is clear that there is still work to be done to shore up the run defense.

The loss to the Falcons was particularly frustrating for the Packers because they had a commanding lead and the opportunity to start the season with back-to-back road wins. However, injuries to key players such as Aaron Jones, Christian Watson, and David Bakhtiari, as well as the loss of left guard Elgton Jenkins during the game, hindered their performance. The Packers now face the challenge of potentially playing with a weakened offensive line in the coming weeks.

Despite the loss, there were some positive aspects for the Packers. They have yet to commit a turnover this season, and quarterback Jordan Love currently leads the NFL in passer rating. The team's young wide receivers have also shown depth and potential, with players like Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks combining for five touchdowns.

Moving forward, the Packers need to show more of a killer instinct and improve their performance in the fourth quarter. In their loss to the Falcons, they were outgained 166-11 in the final period, and Love was unable to complete a pass. In terms of injuries, Jenkins revealed that he sprained his medial collateral ligament but expects to return later in the season. Bakhtiari's absence in the Falcons game was not due to the turf field but rather an injury to his knee that caused swelling.
