Eagles Win 12-6, Spoiling Bears' Homecoming on Friday

Falkner escapes with a 12-6 win over Alcorn Central in a tight contest, marking their second consecutive road win.

In a thrilling match that came down to the wire, Alcorn Central and Falkner faced off for the second consecutive season. The Eagles emerged victorious with a 12-6 win, spoiling the Bears' homecoming game and securing their second consecutive road win against their Class 3A opponents. This victory brings Falkner's record to 2-1 for the young season, with both wins coming on the road.

The game remained scoreless in the first quarter, but the Eagles struck first in the late second period. Senior tailback Kane Floyd powered into the end zone with a 2-yard score, giving Falkner a 6-0 lead at halftime. In the third quarter, the Eagles extended their lead as quarterback Gavin Wooley connected with Chris Nunley for a 28-yard touchdown, making it 12-0.

Alcorn Central managed to get on the board early in the fourth quarter when Andrew Hardin caught a 25-yard pass from Talen Kemp. However, the two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score at 12-6 with 8:46 remaining in the game.

In the final minutes of the contest, Falkner fumbled, giving the Bears an opportunity to tie the game or take the lead. But the Eagles' defense held strong, preserving their hard-fought victory.

Wooley had an impressive performance, completing 9 of 10 pass attempts for 145 yards and a touchdown. Nunley showcased his versatility with a total of 191 all-purpose yards, including 115 rushing yards on 11 carries. Senior Jojo Swinford and Floyd also contributed to Falkner's offensive success, collecting 104 and 50 yards, respectively. Despite the low-scoring finish, the Eagles managed to amass over 400 yards of offense.

With this win, Falkner narrows the series record against Alcorn Central to 10-9-1, dating back to their first meeting in 1968.

Looking ahead, the Eagles will be hosting Vardaman on Friday. Vardaman boasts a perfect 3-0 record for the season, allowing just 11.3 points per game while scoring an impressive 34.3 points of their own. Falkner has a historical record of 10-19 against Vardaman, who is a perennial 1A member. In their last meeting in 2016, Vardaman came out on top with a commanding 62-26 victory.

In conclusion, Falkner's hard-fought win over Alcorn Central showcases the team's resilience and determination. With impressive performances from key players, the Eagles managed to secure their second road win of the season. As they prepare to face Vardaman, Falkner will need to bring their A-game to overcome the tough competition.
