Surprisingly, it was the Lions who struck first, with Amon-Ra St. Brown scoring the first touchdown of the 2023 season on a nine-yard reception. Quarterback Jared Goff initially looked to new running back David Montgomery on the wheel route, but with him covered, he found St. Brown, who had an impressive season last year with 106 catches for 1,161 yards. This touchdown was St. Brown's third reception of the drive, but it almost didn't happen right away.

The Lions' touchdown came after an unexpected move by head coach Dan Campbell. On 4th and 2 from their own 17-yard line, Campbell opted for a fake punt. Jalen Reeves-Maybin took the direct snap and gained three yards, giving the Lions the momentum they needed. What could have been their second consecutive three-and-out turned into a 14-play, 91-yard touchdown drive that lasted over eight minutes.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs were holding a ceremony to celebrate their Super Bowl LVII victory over the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this year. However, they were without their star tight end Travis Kelce, who had injured his knee in practice on Tuesday. The Detroit defense managed to keep the Chiefs scoreless in the first quarter.
