Mike Williams death: former NFL receiver's cause of accident revealed

Former NFL wide receiver Mike Williams tragically passed away at the age of 36 due to injuries suffered at a construction site.

Tragic news has emerged surrounding the passing of Mike Williams, a retired NFL wide receiver and native of Buffalo, NY. The 36-year-old former football standout met his untimely demise following injuries sustained in an accident at a construction site. It has been revealed that Williams suffered a severe blow to the head from a steel beam on September 1st.

Confirmation of Williams' passing was first reported by Buffalo Bills beat reporter Jon Scott. According to Scott, the former receiver had severed ties with the NFL in 2016 and had since pursued other endeavors. However, his life was cut short due to this devastating accident.

The heart-wrenching details of the events leading to Williams' death were shared on a GoFundMe page created by his father, Wendell Muhammad. Muhammad explained that his son lost consciousness as a result of the injuries sustained in the accident. Williams suffered swelling in his brain and spinal cord, resulting in complete paralysis of his right arm and lower body.

On the fateful night of September 1, 2023, Williams passed out and was rushed to the ICU due to severe breathing problems. Doctors discovered that his diaphragm was pressing on his lungs, causing complications. They also found that his lungs were filled with water. Although medical professionals were able to alleviate some of the breathing difficulties, Williams never regained consciousness and ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

It is important to note that this Mike Williams should not be confused with the active LA Chargers receiver who shares the same name. The late Williams was a remarkable player in the NFL and received high praise from former coaches and teammates. As a standout at Syracuse University, he achieved great success, with his 20 touchdowns tying for the second-most in school history, alongside Pro Football Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison. In 2010, Williams was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fourth round (101st overall).

During his time in Tampa, Williams set records as a receiver, with 11 touchdown catches in his rookie season. It wasn't until Mike Evans came along that this record was broken, making Williams' achievement a historic moment in franchise history.

After four seasons with the Buccaneers, Williams was traded to the Buffalo Bills for a sixth-round pick. He was thrilled at the opportunity to play for his hometown team, but unfortunately, things didn't go as planned. Following a brief stint on the Kansas City Chiefs' practice squad, Williams decided to retire from his NFL career. Throughout his time in the league, he accumulated 223 receptions for 3,089 yards and 26 touchdowns, earning nearly $12 million in career earnings.
