Miami Football's Coordinator Choices: The Key to Confidence

Houston and Miami have had different offensive performances in recent years, but Miami's offense improved in 2021. Houston had more players drafted to the NFL, and both Clayton Tune and Nathaniel Dell had impressive seasons. The Miami roster is talented, and the team is adding more pieces.

In the past couple of years, the Houston football team has been dominant, averaging an impressive 35.9 points per game. On the other hand, the Miami team has averaged 28.8 points per game during the same period. However, in 2021, Miami showed improvement, averaging 34 points per game when they ran a similar offensive system to the one used by Dawson under Rhett Lashlee.

When it comes to player talent, Houston had the upper hand last season, with three offensive players drafted to the NFL compared to Miami's one (Will Mallory). Quarterback Clayton Tune and Wide Receiver Nathaniel "Tank" Dell had exceptional performances in the 2022 season.

Tune, as a senior, showcased his skills by ranking high in several national passing categories. He finished third in passing touchdowns with 40, fifth in passing yards per game with 313.4, and second in points responsible per game with 21.2. Additionally, he ranked seventh in completions per game with 25.69. Pro Football gave him an impressive passing grade of 91.3, tying him for the best in the country. Tune's outstanding performance earned him a spot in the fifth round of the NFL draft, where he was selected by the Arizona Cardinals.

Miami's starting quarterback, Tyler Van Dyke, was compared to Tune by Dawson, who noted that both players possess natural throwing abilities. This suggests that Van Dyke has the potential to excel in a similar manner to Tune.

Nathaniel "Tank" Dell, the standout Wide Receiver for Miami, had an exceptional season as well. He led the nation in receiving touchdowns with 17, receiving yards with 1,398, and multi-touchdown receiving games with 6. Dell also recorded six 100-yard receiving games, ranking fifth nationally. His outstanding performance earned him a third-round selection by the Houston Texans in the NFL draft.

Derek Parish, a fullback, was also drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars, further demonstrating the talent present on the Miami roster.

When asked about the talent level on the Miami team, Dawson expressed confidence, stating that he was happy with the talent when he arrived and that they are continuously adding more pieces to the puzzle. He emphasized that talent will never be an excuse and that the true test will come when they start playing real football.
