Asia Cup 2023: Iftikhar Ahmed, Babar Azam Lead Pakistan to Victory with Tons over Nepal

Pakistan dominates Nepal in Asia Cup 2023 opener with a massive 238-run victory. Babar Azam and Iftikhar Ahmed shine with centuries.

In a thrilling Asia Cup 2023 opener at the Multan Cricket Stadium, Pakistan emerged victorious over Nepal with a staggering 238-run margin. The match showcased Pakistan's dominance as they posted an impressive total of 342/6, courtesy of outstanding performances by Iftikhar Ahmed, who remained unbeaten with 109 runs off just 71 balls, and Babar Azam, who scored a magnificent 151 off 131 deliveries. Nepal's batting line-up struggled to counter Pakistan's bowling attack, ultimately being dismissed for a mere 104 runs. Shadab Khan's exceptional figures of 4/27 stood out among the winning team's bowlers.

Winning the toss, Pakistan opted to bat first but faced an initial setback as they lost both their openers early in the innings. Fakhar Zaman departed after contributing 14 runs individually, followed by Imam-ul-Haq, who was run out after scoring 5 runs. This put Pakistan in a precarious position at 25/2. However, a crucial 86-run partnership between Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman stabilized the innings momentarily before two quick wickets fell again.

It was then that the remarkable partnership between Babar Azam and Iftikhar began, ultimately reaching an astounding 214 runs. Babar displayed a cautious approach, carefully building his innings and reaching a century before unleashing a flurry of powerful strokes in the death overs. On the other hand, Iftikhar played the role of the aggressor, injecting much-needed momentum into the innings.

Nepal's Sompal Kami managed to pick up two wickets but conceded 85 runs, while Karan KC and Sandeep Lamichhane contributed with a wicket each. Two wickets also came through run-outs. In their pursuit of the target, Nepal's Sompal Kami (28) and Aarif Sheikh (26) showed some resistance, but Pakistan ultimately proved to be too strong.

Pakistan's bowling attack was equally impressive, with Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf both taking two wickets for 27 and 16 runs respectively, in addition to Shadab Khan's exceptional spell. Mohammad Nawaz and Naseem Shah also contributed with a wicket each.

Looking ahead, both Pakistan and Nepal will face India in their upcoming matches. Pakistan is scheduled to take on India on September 2, while Nepal will face Rohit Sharma & Co. on September 4.
