Cardinals Release Colt McCoy, Kyler Murray Reportedly Headed to PUP List

In a surprising move, Colt McCoy has been released by the Arizona Cardinals on Monday. This decision comes as the team's franchise quarterback, Kyler Murray, is expected to start the season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. With these roster changes, first-year head coach Jonathan Gannon now faces a crucial decision: whether to go with rookie Clayton Tune or seasoned veteran Josh Dobbs as the team's starting quarterback.

Last week, the Cardinals made a trade with the Cleveland Browns, acquiring Dobbs and a seventh-round pick in exchange for a fifth-round pick. This move was made to provide additional support at the quarterback position while Murray continues his rehabilitation from ACL surgery on his right knee.

Murray, who was the first overall pick in the draft, suffered the ACL injury on December 12th last season. By being placed on the PUP list, he would be required to miss at least the first four games of the 2023 season, in accordance with NFL rules.

Tune, a fifth-round pick from the University of Houston, has impressed Coach Gannon with his performances during the preseason. He has shown great growth and learning potential, stating, "I feel like I have learned a lot, grown a lot. I just continue to learn each day that goes by."

On the other hand, Dobbs, a fourth-round pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2017, had the opportunity to make two starts last season with the Tennessee Titans. While he may lack experience as a starter, his time in the league has given him valuable knowledge and skills.

Meanwhile, Colt McCoy, who spent the past three seasons with the Cardinals, has been released. McCoy, a former third-round pick of the Browns in 2010, has had stints with the San Francisco 49ers, Washington Football Team, and the New York Giants throughout his career.

In addition to McCoy, safety Sean Chandler and cornerback Nate Hairston were also released as part of the team's efforts to meet the 53-man limit for the regular season.

These roster changes and the uncertainty surrounding Murray's return have created an intriguing situation for the Cardinals. Coach Gannon will need to carefully consider the options of starting either Tune or Dobbs, weighing their potential and capabilities.
