Raiders' Josh McDaniels Evaluates Jimmy Garoppolo's Performance with 7 Interceptions in Camp Practices

Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who signed a three-year, $72.75 million deal, has thrown seven interceptions in training camp practices.

With training camp in full swing, the 2023 NFL season is fast approaching, and fans are eager to see how players with new teams and those recovering from injuries will perform. One player who falls into both categories is quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Garoppolo, 31 years old, recently signed a lucrative three-year, $72.75 million contract with the Las Vegas Raiders, reuniting with head coach Josh McDaniels, who previously served as his offensive coordinator with the New England Patriots. This offseason, there has been much speculation about how Garoppolo will adapt to his new team, especially considering his recent injury.

In December of 2022, Garoppolo suffered a left foot injury while playing for the San Francisco 49ers. He spent the offseason rehabilitating and successfully passed his training camp physical in July. Interestingly, Garoppolo did not undergo the physical when he initially signed with the Raiders, as his contract included a waiver regarding his injury.

Unfortunately, Garoppolo's performance in training camp has not been flawless. In the past two practices, he has thrown a total of seven interceptions. While this may raise concerns among fans and media, McDaniels remains confident in his quarterback. He asserts that he has "no concerns" about the interceptions and highlights the competitive nature of the camp.

McDaniels emphasizes the importance of giving credit to the defense when they make a play, rather than solely focusing on the quarterback's mistakes. The Raiders' defense struggled with takeaways last season, ranking last in the league with only 13. As a result, the team is prioritizing improvement in this area during the offseason.

It is worth noting that McDaniels expressed no anxiety about Garoppolo's readiness for training camp, even when the quarterback missed OTAs due to foot surgery. During Garoppolo's absence, veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer, who also has a history with McDaniels from their time with the Patriots, took first-team reps.

Before his injury last year, Garoppolo had a solid performance, throwing for 2,437 yards with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions in 11 games, 10 of which he started. In the 2021 season, he threw 12 interceptions in 15 games, while in 2020, he had five interceptions in six games. His highest interception count came in 2019, with 13 interceptions in 16 games. Notably, in the same year, Garoppolo played a pivotal role in leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl.

As a two-time Super Bowl champion, Garoppolo boasts an impressive record as a starting quarterback, with a 40-17 win-loss ratio and four playoff victories. For the upcoming season, his base salary is set at $22.5 million, following the conversion of his $11.25 million signing bonus into base salary.
