NFL Hall of Fame Game: DeMarcus Ware Tribute - Demaryius Thomas Remembered

DeMarcus Ware surprises fans by singing the national anthem ahead of the Hall of Fame Game as a tribute to his late teammate.

DeMarcus Ware, a legendary player for the Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos, is set to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this week. Known for his exceptional talent as a pass rusher, Ware surprised fans by showcasing his singing skills on the field before the annual Hall of Fame Game, which serves as the opener for the NFL's preseason.

The decision to sing the national anthem holds a touching story behind it. According to the Dallas Morning News, Ware used to sing the anthem alongside his former Broncos teammate, Demaryius Thomas, during their time together in Denver. Tragically, Thomas passed away in 2021 due to complications related to a seizure disorder, with the additional diagnosis of CTE.

The bond between Ware and Thomas was evidently strong, leading Ware to choose singing as a heartfelt tribute to his late teammate. However, Ware is not the only one honoring Thomas's memory. Following his death, the Broncos took the field with only 10 players in their next game, symbolizing the absence left by Thomas. Additionally, Peyton Manning, another iconic figure in football, established a scholarship in Thomas's name.

Despite the emotional significance of the moment, Ware admitted to feeling nervous about singing the anthem. He acknowledged that no amount of preparation or vocal lessons can fully ready someone for the weight of the responsibility. When the crowd falls silent, and it becomes one's turn to sing to the entire United States of America, the enormity of the occasion becomes apparent.

The Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony for Ware is scheduled for noon ET on Saturday. He will be joined by other esteemed individuals such as Rondé Barber, Don Coryell, Chuck Howley, Joe Klecko, Darrelle Revis, Ken Riley, Joe Thomas, and Zach Thomas. This event marks a momentous occasion in Ware's career, recognizing his exceptional contributions to the sport and solidifying his place in football history.
