Northport Summer Theater Review: Unwind with 'Escape to Margaritaville'

Jimmy Buffet's Escape to Margaritaville is a fun, lively show.

Escape to Margaritaville at the John W. Engeman Theater in Northport is the ultimate destination for a good time. This show, based on the music of Jimmy Buffet, is not just for die-hard fans, but for anyone looking to have a blast.

The story revolves around Tully, a part-time bartender and singer who is also quite the ladies' man. He works on a sunny island and meets Rachel, a visitor who is there for a work trip and bachelorette party. Rachel is a workaholic, but Tully is determined to win her over and falls head over heels in love.

As the audience is serenaded by the beachy tunes of Jimmy Buffet, they are taken on a journey through the island, getting to know the colorful characters who inhabit it. The show is not only hilarious, but it also has the audience singing along to beloved hits like "Fins," "Cheeseburger in Paradise," and, of course, "Margaritaville."

Directed and choreographed by Keith Andrews, the entire cast delivers outstanding performances. Sam Sherwood shines as Tully, while Amanda Bailey, Maggie Bera, Hunter Brown, and Meadow Nguy also impress in their roles.

Dan Sharkey's portrayal of J.D., a quirky and somewhat lost character, is both hilarious and endearing. The audience can't help but fall in love with him as they learn more about his backstory.

Before the show, make sure to arrive early and enjoy a pre-show where you can join the cast on stage, grab a drink, and listen to some fantastic tunes. It's like being transported to the resort itself!

The set design is stunning, making you feel like you're in the Caribbean or Hawaii. Vibrant tropical flowers decorate the stage, and the live house band adds to the immersive experience.

Although most of the show takes place at the resort, the cast seamlessly transitions between different locations, such as Tammy's apartment, the airport, a restaurant, and even an active volcano. Don't worry, though, the volcano hasn't erupted in years, except for that one time it took out some real estate agents on vacation for a conference (you'll learn more about that in the show).

So, put on your favorite Hawaiian shirt, slip on your sandals, and have a shot of tequila before heading to The Engeman for an unforgettable night out. After all, it's always 5 o'clock somewhere!

Escape to Margaritaville is showing at the John W. Engeman Theater in Northport until August 27. Showtimes are on Thursdays and Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. Some Wednesdays and Sunday evenings are also available.
