Final Trailer Released for Blue Beetle

"Blue Beetle" film marks DC superhero's first appearance on the big screen.

The Reyes family has just welcomed their very own superhero, the Blue Beetle, onto the big screen in the upcoming Warner Bros. Pictures film. Directed by Angel Manuel Soto, the movie stars Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, the titular character and his alter ego.

Jaime Reyes, a recent college graduate, returns home with big dreams for his future, only to find that things have changed. As he tries to find his place in the world, fate intervenes when he stumbles upon an ancient relic of alien biotechnology called the Scarab. The Scarab chooses Jaime as its host, granting him an incredible suit of armor with extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever altering his destiny as he becomes the superhero Blue Beetle.

The original Blue Beetle, Dan Garret, was introduced in 1939 as a police officer who fought crime using advanced technology and limited superhuman abilities gained from ingesting a mysterious substance called Vitamin 2X. Like other heroes of that era, he left his trademarked scarab as a calling card.

In 1964, Charlton Comics introduced a revamped version of the character named Dan Garrett, an archaeologist who gained superhuman strength and durability from an ancient Egyptian scarab with mystical abilities.

Ted Kord, created in 1966 by Charlton Comics and later acquired by DC, was a student of Garret who carried on his legacy without any superpowers. Instead, he relied on his technological genius to create weapons and vehicles to compensate for his lack of scarab abilities.

Jaime Reyes was introduced by DC in 2006, expanding and reimagining the Blue Beetle mythos. In this iteration, the scarab is revealed to be of alien origin and bonds with Reyes, granting him extraterrestrial armor shortly after Kord's death.

Warner Bros. has now brought the modern live-action version of Blue Beetle, Jaime Reyes, to the screen as part of the ever-evolving DC Entertainment Universe. True to the character's comic book origins, Reyes is a young Mexican-American living in El Paso, Texas, who comes across an alien artifact resembling a mechanical scarab.

The trailer for the film shows Reyes unwittingly becoming a courier for the stolen device, which is handed to him because he is an unknown factor. He is instructed not to open the burger box containing the artifact. Of course, being a superhero story, Jaime can't resist opening the box, leading to a traumatic bonding experience with the scarab at a molecular and possibly genetic level. From this point on, the real adventure begins as Jaime discovers the incredible abilities of the scarab, while also attracting the attention of the artifact's original owners. Adding a nice nod to the comics, one of the film's villains is Victoria Kord, the sister of the renowned scientist Ted Kord, although it is unclear if Ted himself will appear in the movie.

Joining Maridueña in the cast are Adriana Barraza, Damían Alcázar, Elpidia Carrillo, Bruna Marquezine, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, and George Lopez. Angel Manuel Soto directs the film from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, based on DC characters. John Rickard and Zev Foreman serve as producers, while Bobby Krlic is responsible for the film's music.

"Blue Beetle," a Warner Bros. Pictures Presentation and a Safran Company Production, will be released internationally in August 2023 and in North America on August 18, 2023. The film will be distributed worldwide.
