Florida Governor and Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis is accused of running a campaign based on racism but calling it equality. DeSantis has declared that "DEI is over in the state of Florida," referring to diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. Critics argue that this is a form of white supremacy and an attempt to dilute Black voting power. DeSantis is accused of stoking white grievance and framing it as a fight for individual rights.

Florida Governor and Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis has come under scrutiny for his campaign strategy, which appears to be centered around racism disguised as equality. This is a common tactic employed by many Republicans seeking political office, but DeSantis seems to have taken it to a new level with his obsession with eradicating discussions about gender identity. While he may see himself as a civil rights leader in the so-called "Jim Woke era," for marginalized communities, he is just another white Christian nationalist perpetuating bigotry and framing it as patriotism and the defense of "God-given" rights.

Recently, DeSantis released a video ad declaring that "DEI is over in the state of Florida." It is worth noting that DeSantis and other Republicans often use the acronym "DEI" instead of explicitly stating "diversity, equity, and inclusion." This is likely a deliberate choice, as using the full phrase would expose red states for what they truly are: hotbeds of white supremacy.

And let's be clear, that's exactly what this is: white supremacy. DeSantis and his fellow Republicans are taking a belief that is predominantly held by white conservatives - the belief that racism is not a significant issue in America - and turning it into policy. This is the very essence of systemic racism, which critical race theory seeks to examine.

During a press conference featured in the video, DeSantis stated, "The whole experiment with DEI is coming to an end in the state of Florida. We are eliminating the DEI programs. We are going to treat people as individuals. We are not going to treat people as members of groups. DEI is better viewed as standing for discrimination, exclusion, and indoctrination, and that has no place in our public institution."

Essentially, DeSantis is claiming that DEI is discriminatory against white people. But this should come as no surprise from the same governor who attempted to dilute Black voting power by redistricting the state's congressional map, breaking up a predominantly Black voting district under the guise of making it "race-neutral." Of course, we are still waiting for his efforts to make predominantly white voting blocks "race-neutral," but that would be seen as anti-white discrimination, right?

At the end of the day, white conservatives need to believe that merit alone is the reason why white people have historically dominated corporate America and higher education. This is why they are waging a war against critical race theory, DEI, and any curriculum that presents a non-whitewashed version of American history. It is easier and more convenient for them to claim that everything is now equal, and any new policies aimed at furthering racial progress are actually racist against white people. This was the energy the Supreme Court tapped into when it struck down affirmative action in college admissions. DeSantis knows that his path to the presidency lies in stoking white grievance and presenting it as a fight for treating individuals equally.

The irony of this situation would be comical if it weren't so dangerous and racist. It is crucial that we recognize the true intentions behind DeSantis' campaign rhetoric and call out his attempts to mask racism as equality. The fight for true equality and justice for all cannot be undermined by those who seek to maintain the status quo of white supremacy.
